Cine-Asie Creatives Line-up for Asia

Ciné-Asie Creatives is currently a representative of three films by the  internationally acclaimed Inuit-Canadian director, Zacharias Kunuk, for Asian distribution: ATANARJUAT: THE FAST RUNNER (Winner Cannes Film Festival 2001), BEFORE TOMORROW (Sundance Film Festival 2009), THE JOURNALS OF KNUD RASMUSSEN (Toronto Film Festival 2006).

Best Canadia First Feature Award at Toronto International Film Festival 2008.

The final installment in the award-winning Nunavut Trilogy directed by Marie-Hélène Cousineau and Madeline Ivalu, from a script by Susan Avingaq, Marie-Hélène Cousineau, and Madeline Ivalu. Produced by Stéphane Rituit, with executive producers Norman Cohn and Zacharias Kunuk. Leading the cast are Madeline Ivalu and her grandson Paul-Dylan Ivalu, joined by Mary Qulitalik, Peter-Henry Arnatsiaq and Tumasie Sivuarapik. Circa 1840 some Inuit tribes have not yet encountered any white people, although rumors circulate about what they might be, where they come from, and why. Yet the focus of the story is on an old woman and her grandson as they perform the ancient daily chores of their culture, all the while struggling to survive by themselves on the remote island they have been abandoned on.

Journals of Knud Rasmussen, The (2006) THE JOURNALS OF KNUD RASMUSSEN (2006)                      

Premiered in 2006 at the Toronto International Film Festival after pre-release screenings in Inuit communities in Canada and Greenland.

A Canadian-Danish film, produced by Isuma and directed by Zacharias Kunuk, about the pressures placed on the traditional Inuit culture when introduced to European cultural influences by explorer Knud Rasmussen. The film depicts the relationship between a group of Inuit in Arctic Canada and three Danish ethnographers and explorers, Knud Rasmussen, Therkel Mathiassen, and Peter Freuchen, during Rasmussen’s “Great Sled Journey” of 1922.

Winner of the 6 Genie Awards, including best picture. Best Canadian Film at the Toronto International Film Festival 2001. Best Film, Best Actor, and Best Actress awards at American Indian Film Festival 2002. Winner at Cannes Film Festival 2001.

Directed by self-taught filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk, this was one of the most successful Canadian films on the film festival scene. The film is set in Igloolik(“place of houses”) in the Eastern Arctic wilderness of Canada at the dawn of the first millennium and tells the story of the effects of a curse placed on the people who live there.

Cine-Asie Creatives Line-up for North America

Ciné-Asie Creatives has currently the distribution rights to two internationally acclaimed Korean films that are gearing up for Canadian theatrical release and distribution: BREATHLESS by YANG Ik-June and MY DEAR ENEMY by LEE Yun-Ki.

Tiger award at the 2009 International Film Festival of Rotterdam, Jury and Le Lotus du meilleur film awards at the Deauville Asian Film Festival, Best film and best actor awards at the 2009 Fantasia International Film Festival, Jury award the 2009 New York Asian Film Festival, SIGNIS Prize and Audience Awards at the 2009 Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival. Official competition at Vancouver International Film Festival 2009 and closing Film at Reel Asia International.

YANG Ik-june’s superb directorial debut stars himself as Sang-hoon, a merciless debt collector with a troubled past.  He meets Yeon-hee, a high school  student struggling through her own difficult home life. The odd friendship that springs from this meeting rapidly becomes a support to both of them as they each begin to discover a hope amidst their hardships that they had not thought could still be found.

My Dear Enemy MY DEAR ENEMY (2009)

Official selection for the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival, the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival 2009, and the 2009 Fantasia Film Festival.

LEE Yoon-ki’s classy and quiet fourth feature film stars KIM Do-yeon and HA Jung-woo as Hee-soo and Byoung-woon, a mismatched pair on an odd one-day journey through Seoul. Hee-soo, a reserved and timid thirty-something, seeks out her ex-boyfriend Byoung-woon, a friendly and happy-go-lucky charmer, to reclaim the $3,500 that she lent him a year ago. Amidst a host of beautiful shots and wonderful, understated comedy, the two set out to gather the money from Byoung-woon’s legion of female acquaintances.

BREATHLESS wins top two prizes at Fantasia

Montreal, July 31st, 2009-Fantasia announced the winners of its jury prizes, and Yang Ik-june’s Breathless was the recipient of both Best Feature Film and Best Male Performance for Yang Ik-june’s stirring portrayal of a foul-mouthed gangster. These awards come in a festival that included such major upcoming films as Park Chan-Wook’s Thirst, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, and Sion Sono’s Love Exposure.

Ciné-Asie Creatives acquires award-winning film BREATHLESS and joins forces with www.HanCinema.com

Montreal, July 23, 2009 – Ciné-Asie Creatives, a Montreal-based distribution and co-production company, has acquired the Canadian distribution rights to the award-winning Korean feature film, BREATHLESS by first-time director Yang Ik-june. With just a few days prior to its premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival, Ciné-Asie Creatives are proud to announce its second distribution title after Lee Yoon-ki’s award-winning feature MY DEAR ENEMY this fall.

MY DEAR ENEMY at Fantasia International Film Festival – A Stunning Success

Ciné-Asie Creatives is proud to announce the acquisition of the film MY DEAR ENEMY for Canadian distribution and the participation of the feature in this year’s Fantasia Film Festival! MY DEAR ENEMY, the critically acclaimed film from Korean director LEE Yoon-ki, in competition at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, stars JEON Do-yeon (SECRET SUNSHINE), winner of the Award for Best Actress at the 62th Cannes Film Festival, and HA Jung-woo of last year’s sleeper hit THE CHASER. Subtle and poetic, LEE Yoon-ki’s take on the road movie explores the nuanced relationship between ex-lovers, drawing audiences in as the pair wanders through the rain-slick streets of Seoul.

Sales and Distribution

Ciné-Asie has just launched a Sales and Distribution venture focusing on Asian and Canadian films. Our first step was the acquisition of 14 fresh Canadian short films that are now circulating in Asian territories to win new audiences and increase awareness and understanding of Canadian culture and arts.

In our first year in this venture, Ciné-Asie is particularly interested in the discovery and promotion of new Asian-Canadian talent and we will gladly review any potential film projects for acquisition or distribution.
